How to Start a Gratitude Practice

Want to start being happier with your life?  Then start being grateful.

It sounds oh-so-simple, because it is.  It’s free, it takes very little time, and it will change your life.  Seriously.
I am not the first person to realize that gratitude it the key to a happy, fulfilled life.  Scientists have studied it.  Wise people have written books about it.  Singers have sung about it.  Remember Sheryl Crow’s line in Soak Up the Sun?  “It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what youve got.”  You listen to Sheryl Crow, right?  🙂

Studies show that people who are consistency grateful have a higher level of positive emotions, optimism, joy and generosity in their life.   They are less likely to feel alone or isolated, and even have a stronger immune system and lower blood pressure.  The science community likes studies, but you don’t need studies to prove that being grateful positively impacts your life.   Once you experience the life-changing effects this simple practice has, you’ll want to stick with it.   The way your outlook on life changes is astounding.

There’s one caveat:  human beings are not hardwired to be grateful.

It’s not enough to say “I’m going to start being grateful” and then BAM! you’re suddenly a glass-half-full kinda person.
It takes practice.  And the best way to practice it is to start a gratitude practice.
