“When I have a treat, I lose control and go overboard. I can’t just have one.”
I ask, “Is that true?”.
“Well, that’s the way it’s always happened before”.
That might be true. I believe you.
You’ve proven yourself right. If I told myself that I lose control every time I eat a sweet, I would overindulge as well. I have given myself permission to do so.
Our actions follow our thoughts. And while that might be true of your past, is that the truth that is going to move your forward?
Is it the truth that you want to keep practicing?
If not, ask, what else is true?
Could it be true that you are working on a healthy relationship with food, and that all foods can fit?
Could it be true that you are working on eliminating the black or white thinking around food?
Could it be true that you can actually have just one, and enjoy it (because you can).
